Self-Led Check-in
Pausing to access Self-energy and check in with your internal system.
A Self-Led Check-in is the simplest, most foundational IFS practice. It's the daily equivalent of asking "How are you?" — but directed inward, toward your parts. Over time, this builds trust with your internal system and makes deeper work possible.
How to Do It
- Pause — Stop what you're doing. Take 2-3 slow breaths.
- Access Self — Notice if you feel some calmness, curiosity, or openness. If not, acknowledge whatever part is active without judgment.
- Ask inside — "Who's here right now? What are you feeling? What do you need me to know?"
- Listen — Wait 10-30 seconds. Notice what comes up — a feeling, thought, body sensation, or image.
- Acknowledge — Whatever shows up, simply say (internally): "I see you. I hear you. Thank you for showing me."
When to Practice
- First thing in the morning — "What parts are active as I start the day?"
- Before a stressful event — "Who's activated about this? What do they need?"
- When you notice a mood shift — "What just happened inside?"
- Before bed — "What parts are carrying something from today?"
- At the start of a group session — helps everyone arrive present
What Makes It "Self-Led"
The check-in is Self-led when you approach your parts with genuine curiosity and warmth — not from another part that's trying to fix, manage, or rush the process. If you notice impatience ("hurry up and feel better"), that's a manager part — gently ask it to step back.
5-Minute Version
Close your eyes. Three breaths. Scan your body from head to feet. Notice any areas of tension, heaviness, or activation. Say hello to what you find. Ask if there's anything it wants you to know today. Thank it. Open your eyes.
