In-Sight

Going inside to be with a part in its world, memory, or felt experience.

In-Sight (sometimes written "insight") is the internal pathway in IFS. You close your eyes, turn your attention inward, and go BE with the part in its world. It's like visiting the part where it lives — in a memory, a landscape, or a felt sense.

How It Works

  • Get centered — Find a comfortable position. Take a few breaths. Ask any background parts to give you space.
  • Turn inward — Close your eyes and notice what's there. A feeling, an image, a memory?
  • Approach the part — Move toward it with curiosity. Let it show you where it is and what it's experiencing.
  • Be with it — Don't try to fix or change anything. Just witness. Let the part feel your presence.

What You Might Experience

  • Seeing a younger version of yourself in a specific memory
  • Finding a part in a symbolic landscape (a cave, a room, floating in space)
  • Feeling the part's emotions directly in your body
  • Hearing the part's voice or thoughts
  • Just a vague "sense" of the part without clear images — that's valid too

When In-Sight Works Well

  • When you feel grounded and centered (sufficient Self-energy)
  • When working with exiles who need to show you what happened
  • During meditation or quiet reflection time
  • When you have privacy and won't be interrupted

Common Challenges

  • "I can't visualize" — In-Sight doesn't require visual images. Body sensations, emotions, or a "felt knowing" all count.
  • Getting flooded — If the part's emotions become too much, that's blending. Ask it to dial back the intensity so you can stay in Self.
  • Nothing happens — Parts may not trust you yet. That's OK. Keep showing up consistently.
